Say hi to Hailey, co-director of Moksha Yoga North Vancouver. She answered a couple questions to help you get to know her.
Q: When and why did you start practicing yoga?
A: On and off since I was 12 years old. I became more dedicated to my practice in my early twenties. It started as a way to be active. However, to this day what I get most out of my practice is an ability to find clarity. This practice keeps me grounded, especially when life gets challenging.
Q: What do you remember about your first Moksha Yoga experience?
A: First I should confess that, before I tried Moksha, I honestly thought hot yoga was ridiculous and said I would never do it. Then my best friend found out that I lived right around the corner from Moksha East Van and she convinced me to give it a try. It was really hot! I was sure I was going to either pass out or throw up during that first class, and I kept thinking “never again’. I was being challenged, not by the instructor but by my own expectations and story of how this experience was going to be. Then there was the AHA moment; final savasana. I was a hot sweaty mess, completely undone, and it was bliss. You know the feeling of doing a challenging hike and finally arriving at the top to a spectacular view with clear blue skies? That’s the feeling. Wide open skies.
Q: When did you complete your Moksha Yoga training?
A: I completed my Moksha Level 1 training in July of 2014. I went on to complete a Trauma Sensitive Training in February of 2015. I’m excited to be doing a Yin Yoga training this August!
Q: What makes you most excited about opening Moksha Yoga North Vancouver?
A: I get to walk to work! I’m serious, I’ve been commuting from North Van to East Van for 2 years now. I can’t wait to mosey on down the hill to the studio, and to bring my dog! More importantly, connecting with and becoming a larger part of this amazing North Vancouver community is so exciting. I’m looking forward to meeting and engaging with everyone who will come to our studio.
Q: What is your favourite yoga pose and why?
A: Currently, it is Mountain Pose. Opening a studio is a big job, there are a lot of responsibilities and very long to-do lists. Pausing for a few breaths to feel my feet on the ground is sometimes the only yoga I do these days. I have a new appreciation for the pose, and it is so, so good. Oh and savasana, always and forever.
Q: Where can we find you when you’re not in the studio?
A: I’m a homebody, so when I’m not working I’m spending time with my fiancée (Mehrnaz) and our dog (Zoe). The three of us are usually hiking in the North Shore Mountains, playing fetch or lazing about (Netflix anyone?). I’m a big foodie, so anything that involves food, I’m there. Also, the new Harry Potter book just came out, so that is my entire plan for the next few weeks (or days).
Q: What’s something fun most people wouldn’t guess about you?
A: Besides the fact that I’m a fantastically queer person? No one ever guesses that. Here are some other interesting tidbits: I studied Holistic Nutrition (and yes I can name all of the B vitamins off by heart), I play the cello, sometimes I eat bacon and drink tequila because YUM, Parks and Recreation is my favourite TV show, and I have 3 brothers, 3 sisters, and 3 step siblings which means my favourite number is 3.
