Say hi to Hannah, co-director of Moksha Yoga North Vancouver. She answered a couple questions to help you get to know her.
Q: When and why did you start practicing yoga?
A: This is always hilarious to reflect back on. My parents started practicing Bikram Yoga regularly when I was a teenager. I dealt with a lot of anxiety when I was younger and my mum kept trying to convince me that hot yoga would be a relaxing and invigorating experience for me. Well, I don’t know about relaxing, but my first yoga class sure taught me a couple of things about being in the moment and breathing through challenge! It took me a couple of years to discover a love of yoga on my own terms. Mainly what brought me back to my mat was the permission yoga offers me to be fully present in my body in the moment. My brain likes to work overtime, all the time, and it’s an incredible feeling to be able to drop that for an hour and just be with my breath. I guess what I’m saying is, as usual, my mum was right all along!
Q: What do you remember about your first Moksha Yoga experience?
A: Mostly I remember sweating my face off! I also remember the emphasis the instructor placed on finding variations of the poses that worked for my body. That was a revelation in and of itself. The idea that yoga didn’t have to be or look a certain way brought so much ease into my experience as a student. I remember landing in the final resting pose, savasana, at the end of class, and the instructor saying that the whole point of the practice was to arrive here and be still. For a Type A go-getter like me, this was a huge paradigm shift. All that movement, all that effort, was to bring me to stillness and peace. In that moment, I was hooked.
Q: When did you complete your Moksha Yoga teacher training?
A: I completed my Level 1 training in Victoria in June of 2013. I completed my Moksha Flow training in LA in November 2015.
Q: What makes you most excited about opening Moksha Yoga North Vancouver?
A: Getting to help build a whole new community from the ground up! People who know me will tell you I’m a consummate extrovert. I love being in the thick of things, meeting new friends, and getting connected. I can’t wait to sit at the front desk and make contact with everyone who walks through our doors. The studio will be a home away from home, a hub where everyone feels welcome and supported. This is what I’m all about. This is what Moksha Yoga is all about.
Q: What is your favourite yoga pose and why?
A: Right now I’m really digging Warrior 2. I love that my lower body has to be really strong and engaged so that my upper body can feel light and free. It’s a great reminder of balance in my body. Not to mention that breathing calmly and finding a smile in such a powerful pose gives me a chance to practice how I react to stressful situations (cough opening a business cough) off my mat!
Q: Where can we find you when you’re not in the studio?
A: I’m a work hard, play hard, nap hard kind of person. In my free time, I can usually be found on a sunny patio having drinks with friends, hiking the trails around Lynn Canyon, concocting recipes, or curled up in my bed with a good book and a cup of tea.
Q: What’s something fun most people wouldn’t guess about you?
A: I’m a huge sci-fi/fantasy nerd and can quote entire episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Oh, and I’ll happily sit and eat an entire jar of kimchi in one go! Can’t get enough of the stuff.
Stay tuned for more details about MYNV’s opening process. We can’t wait to see you on your mat in early 2017!
